Green car sales rise after incentives introduced

The Irish Times reports the successes that have been achieved up until now:

·         Tax Incentives to buy greener, energy efficient cars have resulted in more sales.

·         There is a significant drop in the overall level of energy used in road freight traffic, since the recession in 2008.

·         The percentage of energy efficient cars was increasing at a fast rate.

·         Car sales have come down by 62.4 per cent by the first ten months of the year

·         Percentage of more energy efficient cars was rising since the introduction of new vehicle registration and road tax bands in July2008

·         Ireland 's total vehicle fleet continue to grow in spite of the downturn, with 2.5 million vehicles in the State at the end of 2008, an increase of 2.3 percent on 2007

·         Majority of increase was of private cars, accounting for 77 percent in 2008; Goods vehicles comprised of 14 percent of the total vehicle fleet

·         Average emission of CO2 of the new cars bought in the year between July 2008 and 2009 have come down considerably by 12 percent

·         SEI Head of Strategy Dr. Brian Motherway said that the car tax changes had altered car-buying patterns.

·         Green Party transport spokesman Ciaran Cuffe said that SEI report shows that green policies do work as a direct result of changes made by Environment Minister John Gormley to car tax and VRT, consumers have modified their behavior and turned to fuel efficient cars.

What do the above findings of the report tell us? Well!
